The impact of antivirus software on computer performance: Myths and realities

3) Firewall can protect the device from all the malicious files
Basically, the firewall is a network security feature that allows incoming and outgoing PC communication.
Reality- A firewall eliminates nefarious traffic but it cannot protect your device from viruses, Trojans, or other malware. The user needs to understand that the firewall is not designed to detect infectious files. You need to have antivirus software to protect your device.
4) Antivirus applications are not equipped to deal with advanced persistent attacks
Reality- The phrase "advanced persistent threat" (APT) has recently become popular and is often used to describe an ominous, terrifying creature that we may talk about at night over a campfire. APT actually doesn't change all that much from malware that was released ten years ago. Cybercriminals frequently repurpose tried-and-true strategies when launching their most recent PC assaults. APT attacks are generally designed to target government agencies or political organizations.

5) Free antivirus programs can protect your device
If you have a free antivirus program, then your device is safe from all threats.
Reality- Free antivirus software can partially protect your device. But if we talk about web protection, then free antivirus software is not sufficient. It does not provide protection against malicious links, phishing attacks, and other viruses. Also, they cannot fight against new variants of viruses and malware.

CVE-2023-21716: A new Office Exploit

 In Feb-2023, Microsoft (MS) patched a vulnerability in Microsoft Word which, if successfully exploited, could allow an attacker to execute remote code without authentication on victims’ machines. This vulnerability has been assigned CVE-2023–21716 and has a CVSS score of 9.8, making it a critical issue. This vulnerability impacted MS word and the Outlook Preview Pane as well. Microsoft along with the patch released a work around for the vulnerability but did not release details about the vulnerability. While we were analysing to identify what was patched, on 06-March, the researcher who reported the bug released a PoC on Twitter . MuddyWater Back with DarkBit

  Recently, we came across a tweet about DarkBit ransomware. An Iranian APT group, named MuddyWater, is reportedly behind the DarkBit ransomware. In this blog we will explore the ransomware’s initial access method, the use of Cobalt Strike and the final ransomware payload. Initial Access Method The initial lure was delivered as an ISO file.
